SCCA Time Trials Guide
SCCA Time Trials (TT) is competitive track driving — you're on a real circuit, running timed laps, competing against others in the same run group. It's more serious than HPDE and significantly more gear-intensive than autocross. The step from HPDE to SCCA TT is the point where most drivers commit to proper safety gear and a purpose-built track setup.
How TT Differs from HPDE
- It's competitive: your times are compared against other drivers in your class. There's a winner.
- Higher gear requirements: suits, HANS, and fire extinguisher are required at most run groups
- Car prep standards are stricter: tech inspection is more thorough
- Passing rules vary: at some groups, open passing is allowed — more like real racing
- Classes are based on modifications: similar to SCCA Solo with TT-specific class designations
Gear Requirements by Run Group
| Run Group | Helmet | Suit | HANS | Gloves | Extinguisher |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TT Touring | SA2015+ | Not req. | Not req. | Not req. | Recommended |
| TT Club | SA2015+ | SFI 3.2A/5+ | Required | Required | Required |
| TT Sport | SA2015+ | SFI 3.2A/5+ | Required | Required | Required |
| TT Track | SA2020 req. | FIA/SFI multi | Required | Required | Required, mounted |
Requirements vary by region — the table above reflects common SCCA TT standards but your specific region may require more or less. Always read your region's supplemental regulations before purchasing gear.
Helmet
SA2020 or SA2015 is accepted at most SCCA TT run groups. SA2020 is required at higher run groups at many regions. M-rated helmets are not accepted. Open-face helmets are typically not accepted at Club level and above.
Driving Suit
TT Club and above requires a multi-layer SFI 3.2A/5 or FIA 8856-2018 suit. SFI 3.2A/1 single-layer suits may be accepted at TT Touring — check your region. Buy for the group you want to run in next, not just where you start.
HANS Device
Required at TT Club and above. HANS (Head and Neck Support) is the standard restraint used in motorsport worldwide. It connects to the helmet via tethers and prevents the head from moving forward in an impact. A used HANS device from a reputable seller is acceptable if it's undamaged and within service life.
TT Car Classes
SCCA TT classes cars differently from Solo. Classes are based on modification level and power-to-weight ratio. Common designations include:
- Touring: near-stock, comfort-oriented — the entry point
- Club: allowed modifications including coilovers, brake upgrades, aero
- Sport: significantly modified, R-compound tires allowed
- Track: heavily prepared, slicks, cage requirements begin
Check the SCCA TT rules and your region's supplements for the full class specification.
